About Cotter Pins

A cotter pin is a split fastener inserted through a drilled hole in a bolt, shaft, or clevis pin to prevent it from backing out or disengaging. Once bent open after insertion, the pin locks the assembly in place — simple, reliable, and used in nearly every piece of mechanical equipment.

Selecting the wrong diameter is the most common cotter pin problem in a shop. Too small and the pin can slip through or fail under load. Too large and it won't fit the hole. Having all six standard diameters stocked eliminates the guesswork entirely.

Low carbon steel with zinc plating is the standard spec for most general repair environments. For saltwater or heavily corrosive environments, stainless steel cotter pins are the right choice.
