The Story
Grade 5 is the most common bolt grade in domestic automotive and OEM manufacturing — strong enough for the vast majority of structural and mechanical applications, with more forgiving torque specs than Grade 8. This 754-piece UNC kit covers 1/4" through 1/2" coarse-thread sizes in a labeled 24-hole metal drawer.
What's Included
- Grade 5 hex head cap screws — 1/4"-20, 5/16"-18, 3/8"-16, and 1/2"-13, multiple lengths per size
- Grade 5 hex nuts — matching every bolt size in the kit
- Flat washers and lock washers — one set per diameter
- 24-hole metal drawer — QR-coded labeled and ready to stock
- 754 pieces total

Best For
- Domestic automotive repair — Grade 5 is the OEM spec for the majority of non-critical American vehicle fasteners including brackets, body hardware, and accessory mounts
- General mechanical assembly — anywhere a Grade 2 isn't strong enough but a Grade 8 is more than required
- Agricultural and construction equipment — medium-duty structural connections where Grade 8's tighter torque tolerances aren't necessary
- Manufacturing and fabrication — shops that need a reliable medium-strength coarse-thread inventory for production assembly
- Shops building a complete imperial inventory — Grade 5 alongside Grade 8 covers the full range of domestic fastener specifications
About Grade 5
Grade 5 is SAE J429's medium-strength fastener grade. At 120,000 PSI minimum tensile strength, it's strong enough for most structural and mechanical applications while being easier to source, easier to torque consistently, and less expensive than Grade 8.
You can identify a Grade 5 bolt by the three radial marks on the bolt head (Grade 8 has six). Most domestic OEM manufacturers specify Grade 5 as the default for non-critical connections — it's the most widely used grade on the road.
Use Grade 5 for general fastening, moderate-load structural connections, and anywhere the manufacturer specifies it. Use Grade 8 for high-stress applications, safety-critical joints, and anywhere you're replacing a hardened or high-strength fastener. See our Grade 8 UNC Assortment if you need the higher strength grade.
